Extracurricular Activities and Schoolwork There are lots of great activities going on in the secondary (drama, junior high boys basketball, high school girls basketball, planning for mock trial and high school boys basketball, chess club, etc.). At Logos, schoolwork comes first. This means that students who participate in extracurricular activities will be held to the same standard as everyone else. Students should look ahead, plan ahead, and redeem the time during busy seasons. Cheers! Matt WhitlingLOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #9

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #8 General Teacher Workday: This week is the last week of the quarter. Encourage your child to finish strong! Friday, October 19, is a teacher workday (no school for students and the front office will be closed). Teachers will be wrapping up the first quarter (grades and report cards) and preparing for the second quarter. There will be no dress uniform day this week. Click here for more information. Elementary Parent/Teacher Conferences: Almost all of the scheduling is complete. A reminder email will be sent out the Monday before conferences. If you have not scheduled yet, please visit this site to do so: http://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Logos . The Wilson/Calene fourth grade Parent/Teacher conferences will be on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 29 and 30). Please see the HAS for details. Assembly: This Thursday morning Mrs. Kappmeyer and Mrs. Anderson’s 6th graders will be on stage in the gym. The assembly will start with a short recitation by Mrs. Sumpter and Mrs. Bradley’s 4th grade class at 8:35. All are welcome! Secondary Junior High Boys Basketball: Here are few details about the season: We are allowing sixth graders to play this year. The start date is October 23rd and the season will run through the second week of December. The cost to participate is $60 per athlete. There is no additional paperwork that needs to be completed by families. Practice will generally be from 5:30-6:45pm in the evening after the first two weeks. Throughout the season, practices and games combined will take up, on average, 3-4 nights a week. Students must have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher the previous quarter in order to play. High School Boys and Girls Basketball: Girls begin on 10/29 and boys on 11/9. All 9th and 11th graders coming out for basketball need to have a physical on file with the school before the first day of practice. All 10th and 12th graders coming out for basketball need to have an Interim Questionnaire Form on file with the school before the first day of practice. These forms can be found on the school website under the Athletics tab. The participation fee for High school basketball is $90 per athlete. Students must have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher the previous quarter in order to play. Study Tip of the Week From this point on, the speech meet judges will not have a copy of each student’s selection in front of them. If your child misses a word or even a whole line from his selection, the best thing to do is – smile and keep on reciting. If the student continues on confidently after a mistake, there’s a good chance that no one else will even notice. Cheers! Matt WhitlingLOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #7
LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #7 General Feed the Need: This Friday students should wear their Fight’n Knight t-shirts and nice jeans to school. Tennis shoes are fine. Please avoid sandals and other more casual footwear. Students are welcome to wear their Logos caps while working in the gym, but they should stay in lockers before and after the event. We are looking forward to a great day! Two Weeks Left: There are only two weeks left in the first quarter. This is a good time to check grades on Renweb (grades 2-12) and make sure that your student is ready to finish the quarter strong! Secondary PSAT: The 10th and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT the morning of October 10 in the gym. Study Tip for the Week Plan ahead. Sit down with your child on Saturday and read over the HAS (elementary) or the Weekly Test Schedule (secondary) together. Talk about the tests and assignments with your child so that he is prepared before the week begins. A few minutes of discussion and study Saturday morning can help take the pressure off in the middle of the week when the circus is in full swing. One elementary example is having your child learn the first 7 Latin and spelling words on Saturday. This puts them in the position of starting the following week ahead of the game. If your child is in 2nd-12th grade, their grades are available on RenWeb. Many families use the weekend to check on academic progress so that they can help emphasize areas that may need extra attention. Cheers! Matt WhitlingLOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #6
LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #6 Elementary Parent/Teacher Conferences: Families with three or more students in the elementary should have received an email last week with details on how to sign up. If you fit this category, and didn’t receive an email, please contact the front office. All other families will receive an opportunity to sign up this Friday. The Wilson/Calene fourth grade Parent/Teacher conferences will be on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 29 and 30). Please see the HAS for details. 5th Grade Play: This Friday morning Mr. Kohl’s 5th graders will be performing a play. The show will open in the gym at 8:35 with a short recitation by the same class. All are welcome! Speech Meet: Selections need to be memorized by October 5. Secondary VB & XC Pictures: Fall sports team pictures are scheduled for Friday, October 5. An envelope came home with your student this week. Please send it and payment with your student on Friday. All athletes need to bring a clean home game uniform to wear for the picture. Pictures will begin during seventh period and go until finished, so students may be later than usual after school. National Merit Honors: Congratulations to seniors Nic Minudri, Nathan Miller and Laina Wyrick on being named semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit® Scholarship Program, based upon scores from the PSAT qualifying test. The 16,000 semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of the nation’s high school seniors, Ninety percent of these semifinalists will qualify as finalists, to compete for National Merit® Scholarships. In addition to these three, senior Ben Euhus was among the 34,000 who attained Commended student status. They join the 67 other Logos alumni who achieved National Merit Honors-well done! Study Tip for the Week Flashcards are a super way to commit material to memory. Whether it is multiplication facts in the elementary or the periodic table for a secondary science class, using flashcards can be a huge help, if they are used wisely. Here are a few tips:- Have the student make the flashcards himself. This is a valuable part of studying. Write the question on one side (5 + 6) and the answer on the back (=11). Make sure that the material is written correctly (spelling and neatness) so that the student is not studying incorrect or confusing material. Also, make sure that the answer is written lightly enough so that you cannot see it through the card.
- Have the student go through the stack of cards. Every card that he gets right should go on the ‘right’ stack and the ones he gets wrong go on the ‘wrong’ stack. Study the ‘wrong’ stack a few times and then go through it again dividing it into two stacks. This will allow him to focus on the information that needs the most attention. Eventually, remix the cards and test on all of them, repeating the process until he has it down.
- Break study time into small bites. It’s usually best to focus on two or three intense fifteen-minute sessions rather than a solid hour with the attendant distractions and bathroom breaks.
LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #5
LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #5 General Drop Off and Pick Up Times: Please drop your child off between 8:00-8:25 AM and pick them up between 3:10-3:30 PM (unless they are participating in an extracurricular activity) as there is not supervision beyond those times. Thank you! Elementary Preschool-1st Grade Midterms: Midterms came home last Wednesday. Please sign the bottom of the form and return it by this Wednesday, September 26. 2nd-6th Grade Midterms: A midterm form came home last Wednesday. Please log on to Renweb and help your child complete it. Our goal is to encourage families to check out Renweb and to help students use the midterm to plan for improvement in any areas that may need work. Please return these forms by Wednesday, September 26. Speech Meet: Selections need to be memorized by October 5. Secondary Renweb: Now that we are half way through the quarter, this is a great time to sit down with your secondary student, log on to Renweb, and check progress in each class. Study Tip for the Week One helpful way to teach your kids not to procrastinate is to ingrain in them the need to study at least Two Days Out. Two Days Out means studying for Friday’s test on Wednesday and Thursday instead of simply the night before. Studying for predictable subjects like spelling and Latin should be spread over the course of the entire week, but for other quizzes and small tests, especially in the secondary, Two Days Out helps form a pattern of planned investment rather than last minute gambling. Cheers! Matt WhitlingLOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #4

Don’t wait for the midterm progress report to come home and get your attention. Require your child to drop off all graded and returned schoolwork at your spot at the dinner table right when he gets home (or some other convenient spot). Before dinner you can look through the stack to check progress. This will also give you the information required to ask intelligent questions during dinner about the topics that are being covered in school. Cheers! Matt WhitlingLOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #2
LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2018 – #2 General Preschool & Kindergarten 2019-20: As our school continues to grow one of our primary needs is classroom space. There is a possibility that preschool and kindergarten will meet off campus next year. Please be in prayer about our building campaign and let Dr. Stephenson know if you have leads on classroom space that we can rent for 2019-20. We are currently accepting applications for new students to Logos for the 2019-2020 school year (current students will re-register in the spring). If you would like to add your child to the new student enrollment pool, applications can be found on the school website. Preschool classes tend to fill up quickly-now is the time to apply. Individual Pictures: Individual pictures will be taken this Friday morning. Families may choose between having their child wear his or her dress uniform or dressing up in a special outfit of your choice. Modesty standards still apply. This is not a day to dress down (professional sports jerseys, jeans, etc.). Elementary Assembly Accompaniment Tryouts: 4th – 6th grade students are welcome to tryout to accompany singing at elementary assemblies. Tryouts will take place Wednesday, September 13 @ 12:00 in the lunchroom. Student accompanists receive one free hot lunch for every assembly they accompany. The music came out last week. Speech Meet: Speech Meet information packets will be coming home with your students this week. All students in 1st-6th grade participate. Selections are due September 17. Secondary Honors Classes: The following honors classes will be offered for the first semester: 9th Grade European History and Church History, 10th Grade Latin, and 12th Grade British Literature. Further details about our honors classes are included on the invitation. Students have already been rostered in Honors Latin 9 and Honors Pre-Calculus. Book Covers: All secondary hardback books need to be covered tomorrow. Please encourage your child to cover these and bring them to class to show their teachers-Thanks! Grievance / Improvement Policy Logos is committed to making small improvements each year so that our school becomes better over time. If you have a suggestion that you think would help improve the school, or if you have a concern (or grievance) with someone involved with the school, please follow the Grievance / Improvement Policy listed in the Parent/Student Handbook. Here are a few basics to keep in mind:- Always assume the best (the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love your neighbor).
- Go directly to the person responsible and graciously ask for their perspective. Explain your concern or idea. Do not pass your concern along to others as this can hurt the school, spread gossip, and possibly make the problem worse.
- If you still have a concern, go to the next level of authority. We want to hear from you and we want to use your perspective to help improve the school.
