LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #8

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #8 General Early Winter: Elementary and secondary students are welcome to wear snow boots throughout the winter season. Teacher Workday: This week is the last week of the quarter. Encourage your child to finish strong! Friday, October 18, is a teacher workday (no school for students and the front office will be closed). Teachers will be wrapping up the first quarter (grades and report cards) and preparing for the second quarter. There will be no dress uniform day this week. Elementary Speech Meet: Wednesday, October 16. Parents are welcome to attend. No pictures, videos, or younger siblings please. Parent/Teacher Conferences: Almost all of the scheduling is complete. A reminder email will be sent out the Monday before conferences. If you have not scheduled yet, please visit this site to do so: http://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Logos . Secondary Dress Shoes: Logos allows for a lot of flexibility in our uniform guidelines. We are thankful for this freedom, but it does require work and tending as fashions change and more options become available. This year we are seeing a need to communicate more clearly as to what we are looking for in the area of secondary dress shoes. The following shoes do not count as dress shoes in the secondary: conservative tennis shoes, Vans, or Vans classic slip-ons (picture attached), Sambas, or skater shoes (regardless of brand, material, or heel height). If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me. PSAT: The 10th and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT the morning of October 16 in the gym. Math Counts: Beginning this Thursday, 7th and 8th grade students are invited to join the Logos Math Counts Team! We will be meeting weekly during lunch from 12:05 - 12:30 in the Science room where we will be practicing for competitions that begin in January. Mr. Chris Owsley and Dr. Tim Nadreau will be the coaches. Bring your lunches. Junior High Boys Basketball: Here are a few details about the season: Depending on numbers, sixth graders may be able to play. The start date is October 22nd and the season will run through the second week of December. The cost to participate is $60 per athlete. There is no additional paperwork that needs to be completed by families. Practice will generally be from 7:30-9:00pm in the evening after the first two weeks. Throughout the season, practices and games combined will take up, on average, 4 nights a week. Students must have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher the previous quarter in order to play. High School Boys and Girls Basketball: Girls begin on 11/4 and boys on 11/15. All 9th and 11th graders coming out for basketball need to have a physical on file with the school before the first day of practice. All 10th and 12th graders coming out for basketball need to have an Interim Questionnaire Form on file with the school before the first day of practice. These forms can be found on the school website under the Athletics tab. The participation fee for High school basketball is $90 per athlete. Students must have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher the previous quarter in order to play. Study Tip for the Week Plan ahead. Sit down with your child on Saturday and read over the HAS (elementary) or the Weekly Test Schedule (secondary) together. Talk about the tests and assignments with your child so that he is prepared before the week begins. A few minutes of discussion and study Saturday morning can help take the pressure off in the middle of the week when the circus is in full swing. One elementary example is having your child learn the first 7 Latin and spelling words on Saturday. This puts them in the position of starting the following week ahead of the game. If your child is in 2nd-12th grade, their grades are available on RenWeb. Many families use the weekend to check on academic progress so that they can help emphasize areas that may need extra attention. Cheers! Matt Whitling

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #7

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #7 General Fight’n Knight Day: This Friday students are welcome to wear nice jeans and their Fight’n Knight shirts to support our drama cast and crew as they put on Much Ado. Much Ado About Nothing: Come one, come all! Logos Varsity Drama is proud to present Much Ado About Nothing. You won't want to miss this Western take on Shakespeare's most beloved comedy! Thurs, Oct 10th and Fri, Oct 11th at 7pm, and Sat, Oct 12th at 1:00 (JV) and 4:30. Secondary students get one free show! Tickets at the door: $10 adult, $5 student/senior, $30 family max. Free Piano: If your family is interested in an upright piano, we have a donor who would love to pass it along. Please contact Debbie Hulbert at Debbie.hulbert7@gmail.com. Two Weeks Left: There are only two weeks left in the first quarter. This is a good time to check grades on Renweb (grades 2-12) and make sure that your student is ready to finish the quarter strong! Elementary Parent/Teacher Conferences: Almost all of the scheduling is complete. A reminder email will be sent out the Monday before conferences. If you have not scheduled yet, please visit this site to do so: http://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Logos . Study Tip for the Week Flashcards are a super way to commit material to memory. Whether it is multiplication facts in the elementary or the periodic table for a secondary science class, using flashcards can be a huge help, if they are used wisely. Here are a few tips: 1. Have the student make the flashcards himself. This is a valuable part of studying. Write the question on one side (5 + 6) and the answer on the back (=11). Make sure that the material is written correctly (spelling and neatness) so that the student is not studying incorrect or confusing material. Also, make sure that the answer is written lightly enough so that you cannot see it through the card. 2. Have the student go through the stack of cards. Every card that he gets right should go on the ‘right’ stack and the ones he gets wrong go on the ‘wrong’ stack. Study the ‘wrong’ stack a few times and then go through it again dividing it into two stacks. This will allow him to focus on the information that needs the most attention. Eventually, remix the cards and test on all of them, repeating the process until he has it down. 3. Break study time into small bites. It’s usually best to focus on two or three intense fifteen-minute sessions rather than a solid hour with the attendant distractions and bathroom breaks. Cheers! Matt Whitling

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #6

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #6 General Much Ado About Nothing: Come one, come all! Logos Varsity Drama is proud to present "Much Ado About Nothing." You won't want to miss this Western take on Shakespeare's most beloved comedy! Thurs, Oct 10th and Fri, Oct 11th at 7pm, and Sat, Oct 12th at 1:00 (JV) and 4:30. Secondary students get one free show! Tickets at the door: $10 adult, $5 student/senior, $30 family max. Elementary Mrs. Anita Merkle: Many of you are aware that Mrs. Merkle (our beloved kindergarten teacher) has been ill over the last few weeks. She thought she was making progress and then needed to head home to recover more last week. At this point, it looks like she is going to need a significant period of rest before she is back to 100% and she has asked to retire from teaching mid-year. While we will miss her greatly, we are very thankful for the way that her colleagues at the Nazarene campus have stepped in to sub for her and we are grateful to report that Mrs. Amy Snell has been hired to teach Mrs. Merkle’s kindergarten class and Mrs. Lauren McMurray has been hired to teach Mrs. Snell’s M/W/F Preschool class (as well as keeping her own T/Th class) for the duration of the year. Please accept our apologies for the disruption, and as always, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Families will be conducting Parent/Teacher Conferences with their child’s “new” teacher during the last week of October. Parent/Teacher Conferences: Families with three or more students in the elementary should have received an email last week with details on how to sign up. If you fit this category, and didn’t receive an email, please contact the front office. All other families will receive an opportunity to sign up this Friday. 5th Grade Play: This Friday morning Mr. Kohl’s 5th graders will be performing a play. The show will open in the gym at 8:35 with a short recitation by Mrs. Wilson’s 2nd grade class. All are welcome! Elementary Romance Each year I make a point of speaking to the 2nd - 6th grade students about a fascinating and sometimes delicate oxymoron - elementary romance. I am very pleased to say that this has not been an issue that Logos elementary students have struggled with in recent memory, nor do I have grave concerns this year. My primary goal is that we maintain a positive school culture in which students do not feel pressure to “grow up” too fast in this area. This week I’ve been stopping in for this year’s installment, and I thought it would be good for you all to know what I had to say to the students and what my expectations are in this area. First of all, the school policy for the elementary and secondary reads, “Public displays of romantic affection are not permitted at school or school activities.” My interpretation of a public display of romantic affection is very narrow. Any singling out of a person of the opposite sex, and anything that you could do to earn yourself the title of “an item” fall into this category. The discussion with the 2nd - 6th graders usually begins with me asking how old they are, and then following up by asking how old they think they will be when they get married. After clarifying, for the sake of the boys, that most people do not wait until they are 37 to marry, we move on to the application. The short form is that these students are a lifetime or more away from getting married, and any preliminary negotiations are absolutely inappropriate in the elementary. I am strongly against silly talk about who likes whom, and I am thoroughly opposed to premature pairing up (in the elementary and secondary). There is far too much fun and hard work for us to keep ourselves occupied with to give attention to cheap soap operas. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Cheers! Matt Whitling

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2019 – #5

General Drop Off and Pick Up Times (Logos Campus): Please drop your child off between 8:00-8:25 AM and pick them up between 3:10-3:30 PM (unless they are participating in an extracurricular activity) as there is no supervision beyond those times. Thank you! Class Pictures: This Friday the 1st-12th graders will have their class pictures taken. This is a dress uniform day. Elementary Preschool-1st Grade Midterms: Midterms came home last Wednesday. Please sign the bottom of the form and return it by this Wednesday, September 25. 2nd-6th Grade Midterms: A midterm form came home last Wednesday. Please log on to Renweb and help your child complete it. Our goal is to encourage families to check out Renweb and to help students use the midterm to plan for improvement in any areas that may need work. Please return these forms by Wednesday, September 25. Speech Meet: Selections need to be memorized by October 2. Secondary Renweb: Now that we are halfway through the quarter, this is a great time to sit down with your secondary student, log on to Renweb, and check progress in each class. Study Tip of the Week One helpful way to teach your kids not to procrastinate is to ingrain in them the need to study at least Two Days Out. Two Days Out means studying for Friday’s test on Wednesday and Thursday instead of simply the night before. Studying for predictable subjects like spelling and Latin should be spread over the course of the entire week, but for other quizzes and small tests, especially in the secondary, Two Days Out helps form a pattern of planned investment rather than last-minute gambling. Cheers! Matt Whitling
