Snow Clothing Guidelines

(Just in case!)

1. Students are not to wear snow clothes in the classroom (hats, jackets, snow pants, etc...). 2. Snow boots are allowed in the classrooms as long as they have been sufficiently stomped and cleaned prior to entering the building. 3. Parents of younger students, please have your child practice putting his own snow clothes on, otherwise it can take half of recess just getting dressed! Thank you. Study Tip of the Week

Over the past couple years we have had a few questions about the school’s policy regarding keeping old tests for younger siblings to use in subsequent years. For example, I have children in grades 9, 8, 5, 4, 2, and Preschool this year. If I was inclined to save tests from year to year, could I use those tests to help the next child study for the same test one or two years later? The short answer is, no. Students who have access to the previous year’s tests and answers have a distinct and unfair advantage over the other students in the class. Teachers, both in the elementary and secondary, provide review sheets before each test. This is what the students should use (along with notes, previous work, etc.) as they prepare for tests. At Logos, using someone else’s old test to study for your test is cheating.

Snow Boots: Elementary and secondary students are welcome to wear snow boots during the snow season. Review of Logos School's production of OKLAHOMA!: After giving a spontaneous and sustained standing ovation, all I could say was "What a great show!" Last night my family and I had the pleasure of watching the Logos School production of "Oklahoma!" They have really gone the extra mile to make this a fantastic production that everyone can enjoy. Under the very capable directing of Tom Garfield, Kate Henreckson and Katie Grauke, the actors sing and dance, dream and fight, weep, woo and wed in a sweeping performance across the stage that will be sure to keep you humming the tunes for days afterward. Watch Curly romance Laurie, Will romance Ado Annie, and Ali Hakim romance everybody (and don't worry, this is Logos: all "kissing" is discreetly hidden or interrupted). See the boisterous Aunt Eller, the frightening Jud Fry, and all the other iconic characters come to life on the Knights' Court stage. Every song and every scene is worth the price of admission. Oklahoma is a masterpiece that you really shouldn't miss. - Jim Nance The show opens tonight at 7:30 in the Knights' Court and runs each night through Saturday, Nov 15. Tickets are available ahead of time from the school office (882-1226) or at the door.

Elementary

Winter Clothes: Be sure to send your children to school with warm clothes.  We will have recess outside unless it is raining hard or below 20 degrees.  This may be a good time to make sure that winter clothing is labeled - just in case!

Secondary

Extracurricular Activities and Schoolwork: There are lots of great activities going on in the secondary (girls volleyball tournament, Oklahoma production, junior high boys basketball games, high school boys basketball tryouts, etc.).  At Logos, school comes first.  This means that students who participate in extracurricular activities will be held to the same standard as everyone else.  Students should look ahead, plan ahead, and redeem the time during busy seasons like this. Saturday Workout: There will be an opportunity for Logos secondary students to work out and be tested this Saturday in the gym.  We will begin at 10:00 with pull-ups and push-ups.  Afterward we will head to the U of I track to run a timed mile.  This may be especially beneficial for high school boys wanting to play basketball this season.  Tryouts begin Monday, November 17 @ 3:30 PM. LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – Week 10

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE - Week 10 General New Room Heaters: With the help of Jody Jacobs and Bob Smathers our rooms on the north side of campus have new heaters!  Now that these rooms are warmer students will no longer need or be allowed to wear jackets or sweatshirts in class.  If your child tends to run cold, he is welcome to wear a uniform sweater. Interschool Speech Meet: The Interschool Speech Meet will take place November 7.  The secondary students who qualify will travel to compete at the Oaks in Spokane. In the elementary, the top two superior scores in each category will advance to the Interschool Speech Meet.  We are hosting the meet this year, and we are looking forward to having two sister schools to compete with: The Oaks (Spokane, WA), and Lakes Bible Academy (Hauser, ID). Elementary Homework-o-Meter: Elementary Homework-o-Meters will come home this Friday with your children.  Please fill these out over the course of the next week and return them to the classroom teachers on November 10.  This helps us gauge the amount of homework our elementary students are doing each night. Secondary Secondary Speech Meet 7th-9th: This Friday, October 31 is the speech meet.  Students should come in their dress uniforms for this event.  There will be an awards assembly in which some of the superior speeches will be delivered at 2:25 in the auditorium.  All are welcome to attend. Winter Activities: Winter is an exciting time in the secondary with basketball, knowledge bowl, and mock trial all starting up.  Mr. Carnahan is working hard to schedule these three activities so that there are very few or no conflicts between them.  If your child wants to participate in more than one of these events, it is important that he prioritize his level of commitment to each activity, and that he communicate this prioritization to his coaches at the beginning of the season. Guidelines for Keeping Sick Children Home Colds: Please keep your child at home if he has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his ability to perform in school (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy). Conjunctivitis (pink-eye): Follow your doctor's advice for returning to school. Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and / or vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours. Fever: The child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100 degrees.  The child can return to school after he has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin). Open Gym: Due to High Protocol, Open Gym is cancelled this week.

Elementary

Elementary Speech Meet: Friday, October 24. Parent Teacher Conferences: Parent Teacher Conferences will take place October 23rd and 24th in the morning and late afternoon. We are looking forward to meeting with you!

Secondary

Secondary Speech Meet 7th-9th: October 31. New PE Teacher: We are delighted to report that the board unanimously decided to hire Mr. Justin Spencer to teach our junior high boys PE class this year. Justin has been volunteering and substituting the PE class since the beginning of the school year, and is excited to be at the helm throughout the rest of the year. Mr. Rusty Olps has decided to further pursue the development of his administrator's position at Sabbath House, a ministry of Christ Church. We are very grateful for Rusty's service to the school, especially in the first quarter of this year as we have been looking for the right person to fill his shoes. Well done, Mr. Olps, and blessings on your new endeavors!

Study Tip for the Week

From this point on, the speech meet judges will not have a copy of each student's selection in front of them. If your child misses a word or even a whole line from his selection, the best thing to do is - smile and keep on reciting. If the student continues on confidently after a mistake, there's a good chance that no one else will even notice. Parking Lot Etiquette: Please be sure not to park your car in the left-hand lane of the front parking lot. When cars are left there it keeps others from being able to exit the lot. The upper lot behind the gym is a great place to drop off and pick up kids, and it is usually not as congested as the front. Next Week: This week is the last week in the first quarter. Encourage your child to finish strong! Friday, October 17, is a teacher work day (no school for students). Teachers will be wrapping up the first quarter (grades and report cards), participating in some teacher in-service, and preparing for the second quarter. Dress Uniforms: There will be no dress uniform day this week. No Friday, no ties!

Elementary

Elementary Speech Meet: Friday, October 24. Selections will be presented in class and graded on the judge's sheet this Thursday as a last practice before the real meet. Volunteers Needed: The 2nd grade class is looking for volunteers to read with a small group of students. There are openings on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:30 AM. Please contact Mrs. Courtney if you are interested. Parent Teacher Conferences: Parent Teacher Conferences will take place October 23rd and 24th in the morning and late afternoon. Sign-up sheets come home to all families this week. We are looking forward to meeting with you! 6th Grade Play: This Thursday the 6th grade will be presenting The Magical Walnut. The assembly will open with a 2nd grade recitation at 8:35. All are welcome to attend!

Secondary

High Protocol: The juniors and seniors will be attending Phantom of the Opera in Spokane on October 22 for their protocol event this year. Secondary Speech Meet 7th-9th: We have moved the Secondary Speech Meet to October 31. This should provide an adequate amount of time for the students to memorize and polish their pieces.

Elementary Romance

Each year I make a point of speaking to the 4th - 6th grade students about a fascinating and sometimes delicate oxymoron - elementary romance. I am very pleased to say that this has not been an issue that Logos elementary students have struggled with in recent memory nor do I have grave concerns this year. My primary goal is that we maintain a positive school culture in which students do not feel pressure to "grow up" too fast in this area. Over the course of the week I'll stop in for this year's installment, and I thought it would be good for you all to know what I had to say to the students and what my expectations are in this area. First of all, the school policy for the elementary and secondary reads, "Public displays of affection are not permitted at school or school activities." My interpretation of a public display of affection is very narrow. Any singling out of a person of the opposite sex and anything that you could do to earn yourself the title of "an item" fall into this category. The discussion with the 4th - 6th graders usually begins with me asking how old they are, and then following up by asking how old they think they will be when they get married. After clarifying, for the sake of the boys, that most people do not wait until they are 37 to marry we move on to the application. The short form is that our students are a lifetime or more away from getting married, and any preliminary negotiations are absolutely inappropriate in the elementary. I am strongly against silly talk about who likes whom, and I am thoroughly opposed to premature pairing up. There is far too much fun and hard work for us to keep ourselves occupied with to give attention to cheap soap operas. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Study Tip for the Week

There are at least two different approaches that parents can take when it comes to homework. Choosing your approach is not always a self-conscious decision, but we all have a philosophy of homework regardless of whether we realize it or not. Let's call the first philosophy the Mastery Approach. Parents operating according to the Mastery Approach require that their child spend as much time as necessary to fully master the material each week. If there are 20 spelling words on the list, Mastery parents will demand that their child spends whatever time is necessary to achieve a 100% on Friday's test. If the child of a Mastery parent is of average intelligence and ability (speaking hypothetically of course!) then that child will end up with an above-average amount of homework each night in order to meet the goal that has been set by the parents. This is fine if your child loves the work and your family has extra time to invest in this way. The Time Management Approach is what we'll call the second philosophy of homework. In this model the parents establish a certain homework routine that they think is reasonable for their child. This homework liturgy takes into account the work to be done, the abilities of the child, and other priorities that may be competing for the family's attention (family devotions, music lessons, athletics, etc.). If the spelling list has 20 words on it, the Time Management parent devotes 15-20 minutes of diligent study each night and leaves the results to God. This sounds easy enough, but the scary part to many parents, is the possibility that they may have a child of ... average intelligence and ability. Terrifying, I realize. If this is the case, then our hypothetical child may bring home "B's" or even a "C" or two. If this prospect is unacceptable, it may be time to reconsider how high you have placed the "bar" and who could be suffering for it. There are times when parents can be frustrated with a teacher for assigning "all of that homework" when instead, the reason for the unwieldy amount of work might stem from the parents' unwillingness to settle for anything less than perfection. Picture Retakes: If you were not pleased with how your child's individual picture turned out, please send the packet to school and have your child prepared for retakes on October 8. Label your Items: Last Friday we had our first Lost and Found sale. It is amazing how much is lost each month. Please consider writing your family name on clothing, lunchboxes, etc. so that we can return these items to their owners.

Elementary

Elementary Speech Meet: Friday, October 24. Selections should be memorized on October 10. 5th Grade Play: This Friday the 5th graders will be performing Alkestis by the great classical Greek playwright Euripides. The assembly will begin with a brief 4th grade recitation at 8:35 in the auditorium. All are welcome to attend.

Secondary

High Protocol: The juniors and seniors will be attending Phantom of the Opera in Spokane on October 22 for their protocol event this year.

Study Tip for the Week

Plan ahead. Sit down with your child on Saturday and read over the HAS (elementary) or the Weekly Test Schedule (secondary) together. Talk about the tests and assignments with your child so that he is prepared before the week begins. A few minutes of discussion and study Saturday morning can help take the pressure off in the middle of the week when the circus is in full swing. If you are interested, please email Mr. Carnahan at logosad@turbonet.com with your preferred size and number (youth and adult sizes are available). All orders are due this Friday, September 26. This may be a great Christmas present idea for the cousins!

Elementary

*Elementary Speech Meet: Friday, October 24. Selections should be memorized on October 10.

Secondary

Tardy Update: If a student shows up to class without his book it is counted as a tardy, due to the fact that he has to go and retrieve it during class time. Since this adds to the opportunities that a student has to receive a tardy, we have changed the guidelines so that 5 tardies, instead of 3 will result in an office visit (applied retroactively). This should provide a more gracious balance, especially as the inclement weather approaches. *High Protocol: The juniors and seniors will be attending Phantom of the Opera in Spokane on October 22 for their protocol event this year.

Study Tip for the Week

One helpful way to teach your kids not to procrastinate is to ingrain in them the need to study at least Two Days Out. Two Days Out means studying for Friday's test on Wednesday and Thursday instead of simply the night before. Studying for predictable subjects like spelling and Latin should be spread over the course of the entire week, but for other quizzes and small tests, especially in the secondary, Two Days Out helps form a pattern of planned investment rather than last minute gambling. *For more information on the designated events above, please see https://logosprincipalspage.com/ All the best, Matt Whitling

Preschool 2009-2010: Next year's preschool class is filling up at a good clip! We currently have five students on the M/W/F list and a few other families that are in the process of applying. If you have any interest in preschool for next year, it may be worth getting your application in early to reserve a spot. 4th Grade Play: This Friday the 4th graders will be performing Johnny Tremain. The assembly will begin with a brief recitation at 8:35 by the 3rd grade class. All are welcome and encouraged to come. Elementary assemblies usually last until 9:15. *High Protocol: The juniors and seniors will be attending Phantom of the Opera in Spokane on October 22 for their protocol event this year. The protocol training schedule is listed below. Parents are welcome to attend the training and the actual event as well. See Mr. Carnahan for details. Protocol training: Session 1: Sept. 23 (Tues.)- 2nd period Session 2: Oct. 14 (Tues.)- 3rd period Session 3: Oct. 20 (Mon.)- 1st period Session 4: Oct. 21 (Tues)- 4th period There are a few students who haven't purchased their Phantom tickets yet. I'd like to encourage you to get that done right away for our planning purposes.

Study Tip for the Week

Encourage your children (1st-9th grade) to begin memorizing their speech meet parts early. The dinner table is a great place to practice. Start by having each child read through his selection, beginning and ending with the title and author. The next night have them recite as much as they can, reading the remainder that has not been memorized yet. By the time the speech meet comes around, the whole family will be ready to hit the stage and perform! *For more information on the designated events above, please see https://logosprincipalspage.com/ All the best, Matt Whitling
