LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2010/11 – #22

General

Fight’n Knight Shirts: This Friday is the first day of the MCL High School Basketball Tournament.  Our first game is Friday at 3:15 in our gym.  Students and staff are welcome to wear their Fight’n Knight t-shirts and nice jeans to school on Friday. Afternoon Kindergarten: Due to the number of applications that we have for 2011-12, we are currently making plans to open an afternoon Kindergarten class. Stay tuned for more details.

Guidelines for Keeping Sick Children Home

Colds: Please keep your child at home if he has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his ability to perform in school (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy). Conjunctivitis (pink-eye): Follow your doctor's advice for returning to school. Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and / or vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours. Fever: The child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100 degrees.  The child can return to school after he has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin). Cheers, Matt Whitling

Logos School Update – 2010/2011 – #20

General

Lower Elementary Enrollment: We are seeing a good number of new applications for next year in Preschool through 3rd grade. If you have children you are hoping to enroll for the first time, it may be wise to turn your application in soon. Re-registration: Re-registration is currently taking place online. To reserve a spot for your current Logos student, please follow this link: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dE92b2loRlRTTXh2LWJXdWxMLW1GUHc6MQ#gid=0

Elementary

Spelling Bee: The 1st – 6th graders will be competing in an in-school spelling bee February 3rd. Grandparents’ Day & Spring Concert: We are hoping to move Grandparents’ Day and the Spring Concert from May 6 to May 13. Please contact me within the next few days if this would conflict with the traveling plans of any grandparents who are coming from out of town for this event.

Secondary

Physics & Calculus: Students who pass pre-calculus as juniors are allowed to take calculus their senior year. In order to be in physics you also must be enrolled in calculus, due to the integration between the two classes. A few parents have expressed an interest in having their children exposed to physics next year even though they are currently not enrolled in pre-calculus as juniors. The secondary staff put their heads together and we’ve come up with the following solutions: 1. During the summer between 11th and 12th grade, students are welcome to enroll in a college pre-calculus class or hire an approved tutor to guide their student through pre-calculus. If the student is successful in working through this material (70% or better), he would be allowed to take calculus and physics in 12th grade. 2. Seniors will be allowed to audit Physics and receive credit toward an independent study next year (Students who are auditing the class are not eligible for the physics trip.). Please contact me if you would like to discuss these options further. Cheers, Matt Whitling

Spelling Bee: The 1st – 6th graders will be competing in an in-school spelling bee February 3rd.  Lists will come home this week. The rules are included below.

Secondary

CTP-4 Testing: Our 7th – 11th graders will be taking their annual standardized tests next week. Please avoid any absences if possible. Part-time students do not take these tests, see Mr. Carnahan regarding the schedule change. Snow Clothing Guidelines 1. Students are not to wear snow clothes in the classroom (hats, scarves, jackets, snow pants, etc...). 2. Snow boots are allowed in the classrooms as long as they have been sufficiently stomped and cleaned prior to entering the building. 3. Parents of younger students, please have your child practice putting his own snow clothes on, otherwise it can take half of recess just getting dressed!  Thank you. Cheers, Matt Whitling

Spelling Bee Rules:

1. The competitors will be given a practice round to acquaint them with the procedures and give them a chance to relax. No one will be eliminated during the practice round. 2. Each competitor, after being given a word, should SAY the word, SPELL the word, and then SAY it again. If the word is mispronounced, the spellmaster should correct the student (Homonyms should automatically be put into a sentence or accompanied with a definition).  This SAY-SPELL-SAY procedure must be followed to ensure that: (1) the speller understands the correct word, and (2) the judges know when the spelling is complete and no more letters will be added.  The head judge will stop the student if he fails to pronounce the word before spelling, or if it is pronounced incorrectly.  NOTE: Failure to say-spell-say will not in itself eliminate the speller from competition, but it will reduce the chances of correct spelling and/or the ability to arbitrate. 3. Contestants must speak clearly and loudly.  The spellmaster’s decision is final in determining the correctness of the spelling, which may be misunderstood if not spoken clearly. 4. The contestant may, before beginning to spell, ask for a definition of the word, ask for the word to be used in a sentence, and/or ask for the word to be repeated.  Requests will be granted until the officials agree that the word has been made reasonably clear to the speller.  If a student takes unreasonable advantage of this opportunity, he will be advised by the spellmaster to say the word and begin spelling. 5. If the word is a proper noun, the spellmaster must say “proper noun” after the word is given so that the student will know to say “capital” at the beginning of the word.  It does not disqualify the student, however, if he forgets to say “capital” but spells the word correctly. 6. If there are two words, e.g. Rocky Mountains, the student should say “space” between the words.  No penalty will be incurred if the student does not say “space.” 7. Books of the Bible that have a Roman numeral in front of them, e.g. I, II, or III John, should only be used as the name. The student should not be required to say or spell “first”, “second”, etc. 8. Words should be selected in a planned sequence, without regard to the perceived ability of the student. The student will have 30 seconds to spell the word from the time he begins the word. Once a word is started, the student may start over, but may only use the letters originally stated; no letter changes are allowed. 9. No talking will be allowed among contestants or between contestants and members of the audience.  If a contestant receives assistance from anyone in the audience, he will be disqualified.  The audience is also requested to remain seated until a break, to avoid confusing or distracting the contestants. 10. When a word is misspelled, the spellmaster will say, "That is incorrect," then correctly spell the word for the contestant, and give the next word to the next speller.  However, when only two spellers remain, the procedures will follow rules #12 and #13. 11. Rounds will continue, with a written record of which students went down in which round, until four students remain. Then it will be announced that third and fourth places will be determined by the next two contestants to go out. 12. When only two spellers remain, the spellmaster will pause to announce the change of elimination procedures.  At that point, when one contestant misspells a word, the other contestant shall be given an opportunity to spell that same word.  If the second contestant spells that word correctly, plus the next word on the spellmaster's list, then the second contestant shall be declared the champion. 13. At any point in the bee, if the competitors exhaust the word list for that grade, the spellmaster is to use words from the next highest grade's list. If, after a number rounds, no one has been eliminated, the spellmaster is to switch to the next higher grade’s word list. This applies even when there are only two competitors remaining. 14. The names and places of the top four winners should be turned in to the principal right after the bee. 15. The top two place winners in 3rd  - 6th  grade will compete in a School Championship Bee. This will determine the Champion Speller of the school.

Thanksgiving Vacation: There will be no school next week.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Snow Boots: Elementary and secondary students are welcome to wear snow boots during the snow season (when it comes).

Note: Mr. Jordan's talk on Thursday at lunch has been canceled. Please pray for the Jordans as Len's headaches have significantly increased over the past few days.

Elementary

Winter Clothes: Be sure to send your children to school with warm clothes.  We will have recess outside unless it is raining hard or below 20 degrees.  This may be a good time to make sure that winter clothing is labeled – just in case!

2nd and 3rd Grade PE?: Our elementary PE program is staffed by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering to help out by teaching a PE class in the second semester, please contact me soon.  Each PE class meets twice a week for 30 minutes. At this point, we are in need of volunteers for 2nd and 3rd grade.

Elementary Parent Surveys: Please take a minute and fill out the attached Elementary Parent Survey.  Turn these in to Mr. Whitling’s box in the front office by Friday.

Secondary

Secondary Student Surveys: This week we will be asking the secondary students to complete a brief survey for each class that they are enrolled in. This survey is designed to communicate the students’ perceptions of the secondary program, to the secondary faculty and administrators. We value the students’ opinion, and our goal is to improve each year. This would be a great time to sit down with your child and discuss each class with him/her. Secondary parents are also welcome to provide input at this time. Simply print out the Secondary Student Survey which is attached to this email and turn it in to Mr. Whitling’s box in the front office this Friday.

Blue vs. White Scrimmage: The varsity boys basketball team will host an exhibition game the day after Thanksgiving, November 26 at 6:00 PM.  All are welcome to come and see this year’s squad go head to head in the Knight’s Court.  Admission is free.

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2010/11 – #12

Elementary

Homework-o-Meter: Please remember to fill these out over the course of the week and return them to the classroom teachers on November 15.  This helps us gauge the amount of homework our elementary students are doing each night.

Secondary

The Sound of Music: The show opens today and runs each night at 7:00 through Saturday, Nov 13. This is one of the most popular musicals of all time! It is appropriate for the entire family and includes many memorable songs. Over forty Logos students are involved in the production, which is directed by Tom Garfield. Ticket information is available at  logosschool.com, or by calling the school office, 882-1226. Extracurricular Activities and Schoolwork: There are lots of great activities going on in the secondary (The Sound of Music, junior high boys basketball games, high school boys basketball tryouts, planning for Mock Trial, Knowledge Bowl, etc.).  At Logos, schoolwork comes first.  This means that students who participate in extracurricular activities will be held to the same standard as everyone else.  Students should look ahead, plan ahead, and redeem the time during busy seasons. Logos School Update – 2010/11 – #11

GENERAL Interschool Speech Meet: The interschool speech meet will take place November 5.  The elementary students who qualified will compete here at Logos and the secondary competitors will travel to the Oaks in Spokane. Fight’n Knight Shirts: This Friday is the final day of the MCL Volleyball Tournament.  Fight'n Knight shirts and nice jeans are in. Inter-school speech meet competitors should be in dress uniform until the competition is over. ELEMENTARY Family Lunch Table: Parents are welcome to come and eat lunch with their students anytime.  We have a special Family Table devoted specifically for that. Homework-o-Meter: Elementary Homework-o-Meters will come home this Friday with your children.  Please fill these out over the course of the next week and return them to the classroom teachers on November 15.  This helps us gauge the amount of homework our elementary students are doing each night. NOTE FOR PARENTS Tattling vs. Reporting I was recently asked what the school’s position was on tattling vs. reporting. On this topic, and all others, the primary watershed is love.  A student who tells the authorities about a violation because he loves his brother (reporting) is on a completely different side of the mountain from one who tells in order to delight in the trouble that his brother will get in (tattling). Elementary teachers are discussing the following guidelines with their students this week. Feel free to follow up at home. Serious Situation (fighting, cheating, disrespect toward parents, foul language, etc.): How to Respond: Students should confront the person and report the situation humbly “Either you can tell Mr. Kohl or I will.” There are some situations in which a student should skip the confronting part and simply report what has happened. Minor Situation (cutting in line, eating rudely at lunch, talking in line, his arm is on my desk, etc.): How to Respond: The first couple times that it happens, students should let love cover a multitude of sins. If this becomes a pattern (3+ times), students should confront the individual “Please stop putting your arm on my desk.” If the individual doesn’t stop, they should report the situation to their teacher who will take care of it. GUIDELINES FOR KEEPING SICK CHILDREN HOME Colds: Please keep your child at home if he has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his ability to perform in school (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy). Conjunctivitis (pink-eye): Follow your doctor's advice.
