Look for an email on Thursday explaining how to find detailed information about each class.   Honors Classes: The following honors classes will be offered for the first semester: 9th Grade Church History, 9th Grade European History, 11th Grade Chemistry, 11th Grade Classical History, 12th Grade Physics, and 12th Grade British Literature.  Invitations will be coming home to all students who have earned a 94% or higher in these classes by midterm. Further details about our honors classes are included on the invitation.

Study Tip for the Week

One helpful way to teach your kids not to procrastinate is to ingrain in them the need to study at least Two Days Out.  Two Days Out means studying for Friday’s test on Wednesday and Thursday instead of simply the night before.  Studying for predictable subjects like spelling and Latin should be spread over the course of the entire week, but for other quizzes and small tests, especially in the secondary, Two Days Out helps form a pattern of planned investment rather than last minute gambling.     For more information about the school please visit https://logosschool.com/   Cheers,   Matt Whitling

Secondary Back to School Night – Rescheduled - : Back to School Night has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 17 from 7:00-9:00 PM due to conflicts with the fair. On that evening we will re-enact, in miniature, a secondary school day.  This is an opportunity for parents to come and sit under the instruction of their child’s teachers as we move through all seven periods contained in a normal school day.  Come and learn apologetics from Mr. Euhus, Classical Literature from Mrs. Merkle, Logic from Mr. Nance, and PE from Mrs. Spencer and Mr. Whitling as we help provide a fuller picture of what your secondary student receives each day.   Speech Meet: Secondary (7th-9th) Speech Meet selections are due October 2.

Encourage your children (1st-9th grade) to begin memorizing their speech meet parts early.  The dinner table is a great place to practice.  Start by having each child read through his selection, beginning and ending with the title and author.  The next night have them recite as much as they can, reading the remainder that has not been memorized yet.  By the time the speech meet comes around, the whole family will be ready to hit the stage and perform!         For more information about the school please visit https://logosschool.com/   Cheers,   Matt Whitling

Guidelines for Keeping Sick Children Home

Colds: Please keep your child at home if he has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his ability to perform in school (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy). Conjunctivitis (pink-eye): Follow your doctor’s advice for returning to school. Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and / or vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours. Fever: The child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100 degrees.  The child can return to school after he has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin).

Elementary

Speech Meet: Speech Meet information packets will be coming home with your students this week. Selections are due September 16.   Assembly Accompaniment Tryouts:  4th – 6th grade students are welcome to tryout to accompany singing at elementary assemblies.  Tryouts will take place Wednesday, September 18 @ 12:00 in the lunch room.  Student accompanists receive one free hot lunch for every assembly they accompany. See Mr. Whitling for a copy of the two songs.   2012-13 SAT Results: SAT results from last year will be coming home this Thursday with your child. Please take a minute to read over the cover letter and individual student scores.

Secondary

Study Tip for the Week

Busy dads need to have a system for staying in touch with how their kids are doing in school.  Don’t wait for the midterm progress report to come home and tell you how things are going.  Require your child to drop off all graded and returned school work at your spot at the dinner table right when he gets home (or some other convenient spot).  Before dinner you can look through the pile to check progress.  This will also give you the information required to ask intelligent questions during dinner about the topics that are being covered in school.     For more information about the school please visit https://logosschool.com/   Cheers,   Matt Whitling

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2013/14 – #2

General

Enrollment for 2014-15: We are currently accepting applications for new students to Logos for the 2014-2015 school year (current students will re-register in the spring).  If you would like to add your child to the new student enrollment pool, applications can be found at https://logosschool.com/admissions/application/.   Friday Attire: This Friday we will begin our normal pattern of wearing our dress uniforms.  Sometimes it is tempting to want to slide into the weekend both mentally and physically.  By dressing up we want to remind ourselves and each other to finish strong.   Game Day Shirts: The first home volleyball games for our high school girls will take place next Tuesday, September 10.  Elementary and secondary students are allowed to wear their Logos Game Day Shirts (this year’s or a previous year’s) and nice jeans (no rips, stains, etc…) or the regular school uniform.  The goal is to have students and parents stay in their Game Day Shirts when they come to cheer for the volleyball girls. The first 50 people wearing a Game Day Shirt into the gym get a free hot dog. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt for yourself, an elementary student, or a younger sibling, please see the front office.

Elementary

Double Class Unity: One main focus in the elementary this year is creating and maintaining unity between our double classes. The teachers are self-consciously working together to make sure that classroom standards are very similar, and they are also looking for ways to ensure that students in both classes have regular contact with each other. For example, in third grade, both Mrs. Akin’s and Mrs. Loyd’s classes have the following regular contact: All recesses together (45 minutes/day), All PE classes together (1 hour/week), Lunch together, boys on one table, girls on another (1 day/week), Field trips scheduled together (stay tuned for the first one in September). Our goal in this is to provide intentional contact between the classes so that students in both know and enjoy each other’s company while benefiting from small class sizes and consistent academic standards.   Elementary Back to School Night: Please save Friday, September 6 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on your calendar.  Back to School Night is a time to meet your child’s teacher and find out more about the school and class.  This event is for parents only, please.
