Selections are to be memorized by Thursday, October 10. Secondary Speech Meet: Secondary (7th-9th) Speech Meet selections are due October 3. Honors Classes: The following honors classes will be offered for the first semester: 9th Grade Church History, 9th Grade European History, 9th Grade European Lit., 9th Grade Latin, 10th Grade US History, 10th Grade Latin, 10th Grade Algebra II, 11th Grade Chemistry, 11th Grade Pre-Calculus, 9th-11th Grade Choir, and 12th Grade British Literature. Study Tip for the Week Encourage your children (1st-9th grade) to begin memorizing their speech meet parts early. The dinner table is a great place to practice. Start by having each child read through his selection, beginning and ending with the title and author. The next night have them recite as much as they can, reading the remainder that has not been memorized yet. By the time the speech meet comes around, the whole family will be ready to hit the stage and perform! Cheers, Matt Whitling

Fight’n Knight Day Tuesday! Wear nice jeans and your Logos shirt tomorrow, as it is the home opener for the high school volleyball team against Nezperce High School.  Come watch great volleyball and enjoy tasty snacks from the concession stand!

Guidelines for Keeping Sick Children Home

Colds: Please keep your child at home if he has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his ability to perform in school (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy).

Conjunctivitis (pink-eye): Follow your doctor’s advice for returning to school.

Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and / or vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours.

Fever: The child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100 degrees.  The child can return to school after he has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin).

Elementary

Assembly Accompaniment Tryouts: 4th – 6th grade students are welcome to tryout to accompany singing at elementary assemblies.  Tryouts will take place Wednesday, September 17 @ 12:00 in the lunchroom.  Student accompanists receive one free hot lunch for every assembly they accompany. I will distribute music this week.

Speech Meet: Speech Meet selections are due September 16.

Reading Group Helpers: Mrs. Kimmell is looking for reading group helpers on Mondays and Wednesday mornings, beginning at about 8:40 and going until about 9:15. If there is a parent or grandparent willing to help out, please contact the front office.

Study Tip for the Week

Busy dads need to have a system for staying in touch with how their kids are doing in school.  Don’t wait for the midterm progress report to come home and tell you how things are going.  Require your child to drop off all graded and returned school work at your spot at the dinner table right when he gets home (or some other convenient spot).  Before dinner you can look through the pile to check progress.  This will also give you the information required to ask intelligent questions during dinner about the topics that are being covered in school.

Cheers,

General Friday Attire: This Friday we will begin our normal pattern of wearing our dress uniforms. Sometimes it is tempting to want to slide into the weekend both mentally and physically. By dressing up we want to remind ourselves and each other, to finish strong.   Individual Pictures: Individual pictures will be taken this Wednesday morning. Families may choose between having their child wear his or her uniform or dressing up in a special outfit of your choice. Modesty standards still apply. This is not a day to dress down.

Elementary

Tryouts will take place Wednesday, September 17 @ 12:00 in the lunchroom. Student accompanists receive one free hot lunch for every assembly they accompany. I will distribute music this week.

Finals Schedule: Please see the school website for the secondary finals schedule.   Boarding Opportunity: The following student has been accepted to Logos and is looking for a boarding situation for 2014-15. It is not uncommon for international students to pay upwards of $9,000 per nine months for room and board. A number of local families are charging ~$6,000 for the school year which is comparatively a good deal.   Edison Li, 10th Grade “Hi my name is Edison Li. I am from China. I will go to 10th grade of Logos school to learn. I grew up with my mother and father. I usually help my mom do housework and I'm willing to do some housework with you. I think my English is not very good, but I'm outgoing and I am looking forward to practicing my English with your family, and I think my English will improve quickly. I like playing basketball and I like watching NBA games; OKC is my favorite team. I like to eat potato and vegetables. I think bread is also nice. I'm looking for a family who would welcome me as part of their family.” If you are interested in hosting Edison, please contact: Glen Galindo 509-432-1921 gggalindo@migrantstudents.org     Cheers,   Matt Whitling

Elementary students are welcome from 6-8 PM and secondary from 8-10 PM. Ball attire: Gentlemen: dress shirt, slacks, tie, and clean athletic shoes. Ladies: knee length dress or skirt with modest neckline and clean athletic shoes. No strapless tops, halter tops, or spaghetti straps.

Elementary

SATs: The 1st-6th graders will be taking the Stanford Achievement Tests this week. Please avoid scheduling appointments if at all possible.   Additional Preschool Opening: Both preschool classes are full for next year and we are continuing to receive applications from interested families. At this point it looks likely that we will be opening up an afternoon M/W/F preschool class. If you are interested in applying for this teaching position, please send me a resume.   Elementary Classrooms: As we work on maintaining continuity between our double classes, it has become clear that the closer the rooms are to each other, the easier it is for teachers and students to work together. Toward this end, next year, both 4th grade classes will be next to each other in the portables, and both 3rd grade classes will be side by side in the main building. We are excited to be able to make this structural change to enhance the quality of our double classes.   Elementary Class Selection: Please stay tuned for details on how to provide input regarding which class your child will be in next year. Mr. Garfield will be sending out details soon.

Secondary

Finals Schedule: Please see the school website for the secondary finals schedule.   Valedictorian and Salutatorian: We are pleased to announce that Stuart Evans and Trevor Morse have been selected to represent our senior class at commencement as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Congratulations, gentlemen!   Cheers,   Matt Whitling

LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2013/14 – #28

 General

Uniforms: Just a few reminders for the spring: Now that the weather is nice, elementary students are welcome to wear shorts to school. Boots are no longer necessary or appropriate in the elementary or secondary, and please save sandals for non-school activities.

Elementary

Classroom Play: This Friday morning the 2nd graders (Blum & Courtney) will be performing on stage. The show will open at 8:35 with a recitation by Mr. Becker’s 5th grade class. All are welcome to attend.   Logos Recitations: It has been our privilege to host the LR program for the past few years. We have enjoyed the contact with our homeschooled brothers and sisters on Friday mornings and the program has grown under the able leadership of Mrs. Gail Erb. With the school board’s blessing, the recitations program will be moving to Bridge Bible Fellowship next year and reorganizing under the title White Horse Hall. This will provide space for them to expand as they seek to serve the homeschooling families in our community.

Secondary

11th Grade MBA in  a Day: Juniors should show up at EMSI at 8:40 this Thursday in their regular school uniform or something nicer. Students are welcome to park in the EMSI parking lot which is behind the building to the west.   EMSI will be hosting the Logos Junior class for a full school day on April 3, 2014 for what we are calling "Logos MBA in a Day". Using our operations at EMSI as an example, we are going to introduce the students to all of the functions that are required to run a business and the various occupations that are involved in each. For instance, a session on product development will explain how businesses create products and introduce students to various vocations in this area such as computer programming, design, and manufacturing. A session on finance will introduce students to all of the ways a business must collect, report, pay taxes on, and distribute money and the various jobs such as accounting, bookkeeping, and tax law that are available in this area. The day will consist of a number of short sessions on topics such as this.   The goal of the day is to give the students a better understanding of the business world and, more importantly, to start them thinking about the gifts, interests, and aptitudes they are gifted with and how they might use those to find a vocation they are passionate about. Rod Olps, EMSI's human resources director, will spend the last section of the day discussing how students should think about their calling, furthering their education, and making key decisions at this stage in life as they grow in Christ and in maturity.   This event will be hosted at the EMSI office (409 S Jackson) and EMSI will be providing lunch for the students as part of the event.       Cheers,   Matt Whitling
