Secondary Openings (please contact Wally Wiggins if interested)
- Classical History (11th grade). Applicants should have a love of history in general and history of the great empires which were so integral to Biblical history and the formation of Western culture. The ideal candidate would be willing to teach both Classical History and Literature together. Teachers will take their students through the periods of the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans in an effort to show how God in his sovereignty raises up empires and brings them down for His purposes, namely to save a people for himself. Classical history is taught in two sections, Monday through Friday. Class periods are 50 minutes each for a total of ~10 hours of contact time each week.
- Classical Literature (11th grade). Applicants should have a love of Western literature in general and the great literary works of the Greeks and Romans in particular. The ideal candidate would be willing to teach both Classical History and Literature together. Teachers will lead their students on a journey through Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Virgil’s Aeneid; tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides; comedy by Aristophanes; selections from the Greek Anthology of poetry (Pindar, Sappho); Plutarch’s Lives, “Marc Anthony”. Classical literature is taught in two sections, Monday through Friday. Class periods are 50 minutes each for a total of ~10 hours of contact time each week.
- European History (9th grade). Applicants should have a love of history in general and the history of the great European cultures in particular. The ideal candidate would be willing to teach both European History and Literature together. This class will cover 1500 years of history from the fall of Rome to the dominance of the British Empire in the late 19th century. It is taught in conjunction with Church History to give a more comprehensive overview of the conditions in which the Western church developed and changed. European literature is taught in two sections, Monday through Friday. Class periods are 50 minutes each for a total of ~10 hours of contact time each week.
- European Literature (9th grade). Applicants should have a love of Western literature in general and the great European literary works in particular. The ideal candidate would be willing to teach both European Literature and History together. This course is designed to lay a good foundation of the basic fundamentals of literature: conflict, character, theme, structure, point of view, and moral tone. This should lead to a greater ability to appreciate and discuss literature selections on a deeper level than plot development alone, learning how to identify a sympathetic or unsympathetic character, as well as the worldviews of authors and characters. Students explore literature through The Son of Roland, Ivanhoe, The Pilgrim’s Progress, Cyrano De Bergerac, and The Count of Monte Cristo, numerous short stories, and poetry. Classical literature is taught in two sections, Monday through Friday. Class periods are 50 minutes each for a total of ~10 hours of contact time each week
- Latin (7th and 8th grade). Applicants should have demonstrated previous experience, a love for the subject, and can articulate the value of Latin as a tool of Classical learning. Applicants must be willing to use Lingua Latina as our principal curriculum. 7th and 8th grade Latin are taught in one 50-minute section, each, M-F. Total contact hours are ~5 for 7th grade and ~5 for 8th grade (~10 hours total)
